It has kept me playing this for years. I took a year off at some point but the urge came back. It is truly a great game, I've found a lot of friends on here for one. Granted, the learning curve can be difficult but the community is quite quick to teach newbies the ropes. I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys to strategize.

great game to casually play while interacting with real people. one of the great aspects to me is that Utopia teaches you that there is a time to lead and a time to follow, and lets you practice this over and over. every 12 weeks all player's slates are wiped and everyone starts anew with tweaks to the races and personalities. really does get quite interesting, especially if you land in a group of communicative players.

What Utopia lacks in pretty graphics it makes up for in game mechanics, community interaction, and challenge.
The challenge of the game will be what you make it, sit on your hands and explore, or jump into the deep end with the sharks and start warring.

I found utopia 10 years ago, I've played on and off since then and it has always been interesting and challenging. From the many race and personality trait combination's there is no end to what you can do.
Whether you are excellent at the game or solely good depends on how much time you put into understanding the many different aspects of your province. Luckily there is a dedicated following who will be more than glad to help you and of course troll you ;).
Also your kingdom specific forum is a great place to get help aswell and is generally free of trolls.... generally.

You get to manage your own province in a group of provinces. A kingdom. Kingdoms got to war. So much is happening! There are all these races and options to go. You setup your province however you need depending on what your role is, thief, attacker bank. Great community!

Utopia is a fantasy-based strategy game. Unlike any other game I know however, you cannot be successful on your own. It's all about teamplay and building a kingdom with a strong mix of attackers, thieves and mages working together. It's a war game, yet the kingdom with most won wars doesn't have to be the winner. Sometimes avoiding a war and strengthening your kingdom is the better option - and this is where diplomacy enters the game as a very important factor.
Over the years, people have build a lot of game enhancing tools and websites which make the game more accessible to everyone. Yet I won't lie - having some affinity to math and being able to evaluate the net effect of various modifiers coming from your chosen race (orc,elf,human,undead,faery etc.) and profession (sorceror,warrior,rouge,...) in combination with your building strategy (every acre of land your province possesses can be build with one of a variety of buildings, each offering a distinct advantage).. well it can get kinda complex is what I'm saying.
Just give it a try, could be this game is just your thing, especially if you enjoy working together with 24 other, possibly like-minded people from all over the world! :D

One of the few browser-based games that really emphasizes team play, that alone can make the experience worthwhile. Sadly plagued by many backwards mechanics that are difficult to understand for a novice player, and difficult to play competitively without guidance from veterans who know the game scene best.
Reminiscent of old BBS door games (created by the man who programmed Barren Realms Elite), so fans of those games would be able to pick up the game much more easily.

Been playing this game for 1 age (1 age = 14-15 weeks real time) quite fun. If you love math you'll have to under the formulas to make it in the top 10 kd. If your not interested in being top 10 and play for fun like me just know your skills and how/when to use them also know what buildings to build and when.
One more thing:

This is a team effort game not a solo game.

While I love the tactical aspect of the game play, its the social aspect that makes utopia what it is. One of the best strategy games running since 1999. Build up your province, but in a way your whole kingdom will benefit from it when it comes to war. Very intelligent game mechanics make this game enjoyable every age (an age runs for about 12-14 weeks) again. The game has a steep learning curve, but don't let that hold you back. Once you figure it out this game will be in your head and it will never go out again. An advice for new players: Go to the Utopia forum and look if any kingdoms are recruiting. In that way, you might be able to start in a better kingdom learning the game from the more experienced players.

Its fun. Its addicting. Doesn't require you to install anything. Doesn't require you to invite a bunch of friends and its not a pay to win kind of game. Doesn't take up a whole bunch of your time and you can play from your phone so can pretty easily work it into your schedule. You can probably login for 5 minutes twice a day and do ok.

I've been playing Utopia on and off for over 10 years now!! Everytime I "take a break" I end up coming back within 6 months and play for another several years straight.
You play in a Kingdom with up to 24 other players, and you work together to war, grow and have fun! Some kingdoms are relaxed and just do what they want for the whole "age" while others work to top "The Charts" for either land, power, war-wins or honor.
The "age" consists of ~13 weeks. Once those ~13 weeks are over, the game resets, the rules change slightly (sometimes a new race is introduced, some troops are made stronger/weaker, and other balancing changes) and everyone gets to start completely from scratch!
Please come join us in the forums, there's a rather large learning curve, and a lot of us have been playing for years! Ask us questions, bounce ideas off of us; we're here to help!

I have played this game off and on since it's very beginning. It's always fun and can interact with people from all around the world and grow as a part of a online community. Doesn't require unreasonable attention and is easily accessible at most work places. Logging in a few times a day for 10 mins or so and everything will run smoothly. Place during times of war the game gets really interesting and the choice of races and personalities changes every age which is about 4-5 months. That way if you have a bad age it's not forever and every age gives you something to strive better for. I recommend this game to anyone who like competition and doesn't have much time anymore for more in-depth games but still wants a challenge.
